The Flax Garden: BEFORE...
A real gem of a space was recently uncovered during the installation of our fabulous new play park.
Upperlands Community Development Group Limited (UCDL) hope to enable the community to transform the area through creation of The Flax Garden.
The Flax Garden will tell the story of the production and exportation of linen through creation of three intimate areas to be enjoyed by everyone in our community.
Support from Men's Sheds Ireland and a generous Live Here Love Here grant will see work beginning by the end of August this year.
An information stall at The Linenhall Centre, Upperlands on Thursday 22nd August 6.30 - 9.30 pm will be your chance to see and hear about our plans.
The Flax Garden:
WORKS BEGINS...
Measuring, testing, thinking, looking, measuring, testing, thinking and looking... there comes a time for making a start. With wonderful Upperlands folk like David Leacock, Mervyn Dripps, Billy Taylor, Jordan Leacock and Jimmy, it's not that big a problem!!
The pegging out presented more questions than answers which led to opportunity: the discovery of an already present ditch to serve as a mill race! How very lucky we are!
What is a Men's Shed?
A Men's Shed is a dedicated, friendly and welcoming meeting place where men can come together.
It's a place where men can share their skills and knowledge with others, learn new skills or redevelop old skills. Good health is based on many factors including feeling good about yourself, being productive and valuable to your community, connecting to friends and maintaining an active body and an active mind.
Becoming a member of a Men’s Shed provides a safe and busy environment where you can find many of these things. Also, importantly, THERE IS NO PRESSURE!!
Men can just come and have a chat and a cuppa if that's all they’re looking for.
The Flax Garden will be designed, constructed and maintained by our community but the first BIG steps in construction will be undertaken by members and friends of our new Upperlands Men's Shed currently being set up.

We all want to see positive changes to where we live. With your help, this campaign will grow the number of people willing to play a part. We'd all like cleaner streets, less dog fouling and graffiti, more green space and better use of unused and derelict buildings.
Through Live Here Love Here we can all do one small thing to help make a big difference in our communities.
Our generous grant from Live Here Love Here will enable us to complete much of the groundwork and hard features for The Flax Garden which will be ready for the magical process of planting and growing.
