Beetling
The various stages in the process of producing fine linen cloth are described here (add link) .
Beetling, however, has a special hold on our village, literally a manifestation of its beating heart: on most work days the rumble of the beech beetles reverberates around the village.
At one stage the number of water powered beetling mills on this stretch of river was in the teens. At some of these sites the buildings remain in various states of repair and for a range of purposes.

By far the most important to us here in the 2020s, however, are three of them:

The original 1740s thatched 'Middle House' mill featured on the cover of Wallace Clark's amazing "Linen on the Green" book.
The Road Engines Mill which is the home of our Flax Visitor Centre and Shanderson's Cafe.
The Road Engines Mill which still operates today, beetling out yards and yards of shiny fine cloth.

A fine idea of the scale of our beetles:
We caught Willy at work during a service week in the Road Engines Mill.
